Are Clear Aligners Better Than Braces?

Clear Aligners Or Metal Braces? Here's How To Choose

Recall your teenage years. How many of your friends had braces? Perhaps you had one too. Many adults who didn't have braces as a teen, or whose teeth have become misaligned, are opting to fix their smile once they have the budget.

But what if you don't want metal brackets in your mouth? Clear aligners are an alternative option that will turn an imperfect smile, just perfect exuding with confidence.

Metal or Clear Braces?

Several procedures are available for straightening the teeth. The most known alternative is probably - traditional metal braces. The metal braces are brackets that are fixed to your teeth. Wires inside the brackets are threaded into holes. Usually, the brackets are made of stainless steel, and the wires remain connected by small rubber bands to the brackets. The wires place a steady, but gentle, force on your teeth to align properly.

Aligners are small, translucent trays that match your teeth. Aligners are removable, in comparison to metal braces. It is the patient's responsibility to put them in and take them off. Patients receive sets of aligners designed to use the same method as braces to move their teeth: constant, gentle pressure.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

Aligners give certain advantages that metal braces failed to provide. Aligners make brushing and flossing simpler since they have to be removed when cleaning your teeth. As with metal brackets, food will not get stuck like that. Since aligners don't have brackets or wires that can loosen, the orthodontist may need fewer repairs and fewer emergency visits.

Getting Treatment

The first step is visiting the orthodontist to get your teeth aligned. They'll do an oral test and take a series of X-rays and pictures of your head and mouth. The orthodontist will also take a picture of your teeth for your recovery preparation.

Current braces require about four to six weeks of the orthodontic change. Patients typically wear braces for one to three years, although after establishing your care plan the orthodontist will get a better idea of your time frame.

The orthodontist will send you many sets if you choose the aligners. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, each package should be worn for one to two weeks. Aligners should be worn 22 hours a day and taken out of the mouth to chew, wash and floss. As with braces, following simple alignments patients will need to wear a retainer.

Which Is More Effective?

Metal braces tend to be more efficient at balancing extremely overcrowded teeth. Metal braces will cost less than aligners too. And you don't have to think about misplacing or losing them since they're fastened to your teeth.

On the other hand, a study published in The Angle Orthodontist found that, though the cost was higher, the average total care period for aligners was shorter than with standard braces.

If you want to improve your teeth appearance but cringe at the thought of metal braces, consult with an orthodontist about your options. Clear aligners might be the solution that you’re looking for in achieving a winning smile!
