Different Types of Cavity Treatment for Kids

Cavities are a deterioration of the enamel of the tooth caused by food and sugar debris left on the teeth. Enamel is much thinner on baby teeth, so when it comes to avoiding cavities, daily brushing is important. While children will eventually lose a set of teeth, that set of teeth must survive until the adult teeth lead them out of the gums, which helps to ensure that the adult teeth develop properly and with ample space. That's why, as soon as a baby's teeth start coming in, oral hygiene is essential and teaching oral hygiene should start at a young age. Given the best attempts to ensure proper oral health, children end up with cavities occasionally. Child cavity care is somewhat similar to adult cavity care, where the most significant element is the preservation of tooth health.

Treatments for Cavities

Treatment will be dependent on the symptoms, age, and general health of your child. It will depend on how serious the condition is, as well.

  • Dental Fillings - For toddlers and kids who have one or more cavities, dental filling is normal. On permanent teeth, as well as baby teeth, fillings can take place. The dentist removes the tooth decay during the operation and then covers the void with a white composite or metal substance. The tooth can be saved or preserved by filling a cavity that forms on a baby tooth.

2 Types of Fillings

* Direct restorations. These involve a single visit in order to put a filling in a prepared hole directly. Such fillings may be made of silver, fine powdered glass, acrylic acid, or resin. Sometimes they are tooth-coloured.

* Indirect restorations. These require 2 visits or more. Inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns, and bridges are part of them. These are made with gold, alloys of base metal, ceramics, or composites. Many of these materials can look like enamel from a natural tooth.

  • Dental Crown - Your dentist might prescribe a dental crown, which is usually silver in color, in cases of serious tooth decay.

  • Tooth Extraction - Sometimes, the baby tooth may need to be removed if the tooth is seriously damaged or has an infection. When your dentist extracts the tooth, a space maintainer can hold the gap intact, which helps permanent teeth grow properly.

What are the signs of a child's tooth decay?

  • The following is the predominant manner in which teeth develop cavities and decay. But for each boy, decay may be a bit distinct.

  • In areas affected, white spots start to form on the teeth. Such spots mean the enamel is beginning to break down. They can contribute to early sensitivity in the teeth.

  • On a tooth, an early cavity emerges. Its color is light brown.

  • This cavity is getting deeper. The darker shade of brown turns to black.

  • Pain in the area around the tooth

  • Sensitivity to certain foods, such as hot or cold beverages and sweets
