All About the City of Brentwood, California

The City of Brentwood is a beautiful and attractive neighborhood for both residents and businesses, situated 55 miles east of San Francisco. Brentwood was incorporated in 1948 and is located in the San Francisco Bay Area's far eastern Contra Costa County area. In agriculture and farming production, the community has a long history. Even with the City's population growth over the past few years, this tradition continues today. In the late spring and summer months, farms in the area are brimming with farmers searching for the new stone fruits, maize and cherries.

The City's incorporated boundary currently totals 14.8 square miles (9,502 acres), with a sphere of influence totaling 17.4 square miles (11,129 acres).

The City provides a full range of services including Police, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Economic Development, Planning, Construction, Code Enforcement, Housing and General Administrative Programs. Fire protection services are provided by the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District to the City of Brentwood. The City manages public water and wastewater systems as well as a recycling system and provides collection and disposal of waste.

Public schools

The public education system of Brentwood has about 7 primary, 3 middle, and 4 high schools, Independence High School, Liberty High School, Freedom High School, and Heritage High School.

The area is served by the Brentwood Unified School District, the Knightsen School District and the High School District of Liberty City. The board of the Brentwood Union School operates on an updated traditional school calendar. There are many schools classified as a California Distinguished School in the Brentwood Union School District. This honor is awarded to about five percent of California schools.

Heritage High School includes a full range of Advanced Placement courses and the area's highest Academic Performance Index (API) ranking, outstanding performing arts programs, and athletic teams in the championship. Heritage is also a facility for solar purposes. Installed at Heritage High School, the 2.38 kW photovoltaic project is designed to demonstrate the advantages and opportunities of renewable energy technology and provide a valuable learning tool for both students and the community.

Agriculture remains important to the local economy, but as the region has become more suburban, it has decreased in relative importance. Since winning several awards at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the California State Fair in recent years, local wineries like Bloomfield, Tamayo, and Hannah Nicole have grown in sales and reputation. There is no heavy industry in the northeastern part of the city and only a small light industrial area. Between 2000 to 2008, Brentwood experienced a strong economic boom.
